Fantastic dinner! Better than other meals we paid 2 or 3 times higher price for. Simple, fresh, tasty food in a cosy yet lively atmosphere. The food is a fresher lighter modern izakaya menu.
No English menu and staff were not able to help with menu translation, but we were able to get by easily enough with Google translate to pick some dishes we like the sound of and they were all top quality. The staff had slightly limited English but we were able to communicate as well as needed.
Recommend 1 or 2 smaller dishes per person then the eel rice to finish. The eel rice made into rice porridge at the end is delicious!
Staff were super nice and friendly. Can highly recommend, be sure to make a reservation as they were fully booked the night we came.
Best meal I enjoyed in Japan! After 2 weeks of visiting across this beautiful country, I chose Ashioto based on previous reviews. From the moment we walked in, to the moment we left, we felt welcome and appreciated. Everyone working there brings fantastic energy and a desire to help make this the best experience. We ordered 6 items, and all of them were out of this world in terms of taste, presentation, and creativity. Eggplant dishes, zucchini ceaser salad, shrimp tempura with bell pepper sandwiched in the batter, renkon root grilled cheese with tuna and a potato based carbonara dish. OMG, I would fly back here just to eat here again! Thank you for the great meal!! Arigato gozaimasu.
I had gond to omakase the other day and Ashioto is waaaaaay better. We wanted to book again the next day to revisit on our short trip in Kyoto and obviously fully booked. Must try place!! (They don't have English menu so be ready to use Google translate 😁) - all the food were amazing and Unagi is a must!!
Have wanted to come to this restaurant for a long time.
It really met my expectations.
Good atmosphere and nice decor.
Ate their lunch menu which was delicious.
Many well thought out dishes with a perfect combination of ingredients.
All in top quality.
The staff were really helpful and nice.
Thank you so much.
Highly recommend checking out this delicious and very cool vegetable-focused Izakaya in Kyoto! We stumbled upon Ashioto since we stayed nearby (in the also wonderful Muromachi Yutone ryokan).
This restaurant does incredibly innovative things with vegetables, fish, and meat, with a focus on vegetables. We loved the fried bonito, the sautéed mushrooms, the yam kimchi, and the broccoli caesar interpretation. Also the yuzu and lemongrass sours were delicious. The staff was so friendly and fun, and the aesthetic in there was very modern and inviting!
This was one of our favorite meals of the trip, and highly recommend it if you’re in Kyoto!
Truly one of the best meals I have ever had in Japan.
The staff is extremely friendly and well-informed about the ingredients that are being used. Furthermore, they try their hardest to explain everything in English to customers who do not speak Japanese, I felt very welcome eating here and the staff was always smiling and willing to help.
The lunch set uses fresh and high quality ingredients and is not expensive at all, you can try many unique Japanese vegetables and dishes for a low price.
For my next trip to Kyoto I will definitely visit again.
ありがとうございました!
We loved our time there. The food was amazing, we got the zucchini salad it was amazing and the seafood rice. The waiter was so helpful to help us order. One of our best eats in Kyoto.
This is a place that you’ve got to try! Good food, fresh ingredients, awesome ambience, helpful and friendly staff!
